Craigielea Nursing Home and Lodge are situated on the
corner of Durham Road and Lyndhurst Avenue in Low Fell, Gateshead.
The two Homes are joined together by a link corridor, and by the
centrally located kitchen and laundry facilities. The Homes are
known jointly as “Craigielea”.
Craigielea is a unique organisation in Gateshead as it is a
charitable, not-for-profit voluntary service whose aim is to provide
good quality residential and nursing care in comfortable and
attractive surroundings. As these two essential services are
available in independent but neighbouring premises, there is the
opportunity for residents to take advantage of a smooth transition
between the Homes should the need arise.
Craigielea Nursing Home has a mix of accommodation within a
magnificent Victorian building which has been updated, extended and
refurbished to create a homely and attractive residence. Nursing
care is available to 27 residents by our own qualified nursing
staff, supported by care staff, on a 24 hour basis. All rooms are
well appointed and comfortably furnished. Medical beds are provided,
along with any specialist equipment such as pressure-relief
mattresses.
The Home has three sitting rooms, all with views of the gardens, and
all with TV and music centres. The main lounge has a widescreen TV
with Sky. Two of the sitting rooms have a small dining facility in
addition to the main dining room.
The purpose-built accommodation in Craigielea Lodge is
available in 33 extremely spacious, single ensuite rooms. All rooms
are attractively decorated and furnished. The main lounge is a
particular feature of the Home, with a vaulted pine ceiling and
comfortable furnishings. It has a lovely view of the gardens, and
direct access to the patio area. Sky TV is available, along with CD
and radio facilities.
The Lodge has four small dining rooms which are available for
activities throughout the day.
Both the Nursing Home and the Lodge have integral passenger lifts.
They each benefit from the very large, mature gardens which are both
attractive and accessible. The central lawn has a fountain and is
surrounded by mature trees and shrubs, with a summer house,
pergolas, seating and greenhouse which may be used by residents.
Call systems are fitted in both Homes so that staff may be contacted
by residents at any time. Bathrooms and toilets are fitted with aids
to assist residents both to retain their independence, and to enjoy
assisted bathing. Both Homes have Parker Baths available to help
make bathing a relaxing and enjoyable time.
The hairdressing salon is situated in the Nursing Home and is
available to all residents. A qualified hairdresser is available
three days per week, at no charge to residents. Yvonne, our
Activities Organiser, also carries out beauty therapy sessions in
the salon. The salon is also home to our walk-on wheelchair scales,
which residents can either step on or be weighed in a wheelchair.
We have our own minibus, purchased as a result of fundraising and
handed over to us by Peter Beardsley. The bus is used for outings
and visits, or simply to take small groups of residents out for a
drive.
